Have you ever touched /usr/include/linux or /usr/include/asm?  What does
ls -ld say about those?

They should be directories.  In the past people had them symlinked to
their current kernel source, but you don't do that with anymore when
using glibc 2.x.

What gcc command line did you use that produced the message?

On Debian sarge it compiles perfectly here.
