I connect the audio cable from my (slower) CD-RW drive to the sound card
and use it whenever I play CDs which keeps my DVD RW drive free for other
things. Under Windows I can play back from either drive since the player
software supports digital playback. I don't know of player software for
Linux that can read the digital data off a CD and turn it in to audio
bypassing the need for a cable between the CD reader and the sound card.
