using only USB harddisks ?

Look for 'boot from removable drive'. If your BIOS is from 2001 or later 
it should be able to. In theory it should work but it would be slow even 
with USB 2.0 imho. Most current boards can boot and run with just ram and 
a usb disk-on-key formatted with something bootable.
