   It sort of sounds like Linux is an ideal system to be installed on an old, slow computer.  Unfortuntately, this is not possible unless you are a skilled Linux user.  I have Red Hat 8 running on an old laptop, and I have it working fine.  I use FVWM instead of Gnome or KDE.  I have to use OO because I am working with a bunch of Windows users and a couple of Mac users.  Otherwise, I would work around that too by running Tex/LaTeX.  Gnumeric is adequate for a lot of spreadsheet work.
