Hi David,
rp-pppoe works well with Sympatico (on Redhat). Make sure you try the
/sbin/adsl-start script that comes with it (instead of any
distro-specific ways to start network interfaces). I would also
recomend getting the latest version directly from their site:

And, as the instructions say, *use the source tar.gz or source RPM!*
