eMachines M6809 Linux Compatibility

This is OT but what laptop would TLUG members recommend for Linux
compatability and durability?
I have a friend who works for Apple and may be able to get me an iBook
(G3, early 2003) on the cheap. I think that with a RAM upgrade it
would run Ubuntu like a dream. Would this be a good route?
