It depends on what you mean by database.  I have heard of one mail server that 
uses a sql database for everything, look at http://www.dbmail.org/

Searching my emails using SQL statements instead of grep (or just IMAP) 
doesn't appeal to me so I have never tried it, I'd be interested to hear how 
things go if you do try it out.
