Perhaps it is sylpheed ( I think that is what the original post said he was using) that is the problem. I, too, sent attachments to someone with a Mac who also could not open the attachments. Later found out that it didn't matter who or what I was sending them to, no one could open them. As it turned out it was one particular version of sylpheed-claws that was the problem. I upgraded and the 'problem' went away.

Just a thought.
