Where ever does this come into play with IMAP?  It is just another
protocol like pop for letting clients access their email.  It does not
change in any way the way the mail is stored on the server.

Perhaps you are thinking of mbox vs. Maildir format.

Not at all the same thing.

IMAP is wonderful ad should be used everywhere, and yes there are ISP's
who offer IMAP to their clients.
