Alex, you need to login as root first. Fortunately, for most problems this
might be doable, it's called single (as opposed to multi-user) mode. If
you use grub to boot with, then edit the grub file so the line that has
the kernel instructions ends with the work single than boot with that. You
will be root without networking or most services available. You do,
however, need to be in front of a console at the machine to do this.
