Trouble using e-macs remotely

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone has seen this problem before or has any
suggestions:

I'm trying to edit a file on a remote machine (running redhat) using emacs
after logging in via ssh from fvmr xwindow on Debian.

The problem is when I emacs the file I get a bunch of ping like sounds
without like the one below that just keeps going on and on.  (Using a
non-Xwindows terminal I don't get this problems, but that's a lot less
convenient)

Has anyone else run into this?  Does anyone know of any simple
solutions or work arounds?
