That was it. 

I ended up having to enable UNIX98_PTYS 
(Device Drivers -> Character devices -> Unix98 PTY support) 

and DEVPTS_FS 
(File Systems -> Pseudo filesystems -> /dev/pts file system for Unix98
PTYs)
