You can also try using g4u http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/ for Linux or Mondo
http://www.mondorescue.org/ which are open source and work well.

Peter, try using the demo copy of Active Disk Image, and see if it works. I
had a similar situation, where I could not get the drive to detect, and this
program got it working, and allowed me to copy the entire HD off, sector by
sector over a couple of days. This program really saved my bacon.
