Blender has been "free" for a long time. The blender 1.5 manual is
dated October 1998. The program could be downloaded with most features
available. Through a small fee you were able to get a key file to
unlock some additional features.
The program went open source July 12 of last year. For more details
(and a one year report on the program's development since it became
