The reason the library does tickets for free events is so that they don't
over-book their facilities. Undoubtedly there will be some no-shows so
there may well be extra seats, but there's a seating limit at the NYCL
Auditorium and it will be enforced. What happens at "sold out" Toronto
Reference Library events is that everyone who is wait-listed or without a
ticket has to wait until a few minutes before the event and then they let
in as many people as they can to fill available seats. But just showing up
doesn't guarantee you'll get in. As I say: there will be no-shows (it's
free, people book on-spec) so it's worth a try if it's important to you.
(Yes, I work for the library. No, I won't be there and I'm in no way
involved in these events - I'm not an official voice on the subject.)
