Just for curiosity, can you try
    "PERSONAL_EMAIL at utoronto.ca"\x5c"SHARED_MAILBOX at utoronto.ca"
in you .fetchmailrc ?  The manpage is not clear whether you can use \xhh
in quoted string (though highly likely).
