Sort of... 
    - You don't have to copy the whole root filesystem over.  You can
      mount the new drive as /home or /home/user only, and then copy
      over only that directory.

    - Or, if you're using mdraid or btrfs, then you can add the new
      drive using 'mdadm' or 'btrfs'.
