Cyanogen Inc. is now a for-profit company with its own agenda, and I'm
leery of their claims that "it's all good and we're keeping everything
open source" - especially now that they're getting funding from
Microsoft.  I'm sure that RMS has consigned them to the bin for this
move - I'm a bit more open-minded than that, but seriously skeptical
about the turn of events.  I think your comparison is apt, but the
future is less than clear - and that's worth noting too.  See also the
OnePlus mess.
