Peter,

   Did you try editing /etc/inittab?  You should see the lines...

# Default runlevel.  (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:

   Change the 4 to a 3.

   The last time I played with Slackware, I changed the 3 to a 4.
