if this is to kick a locked machine, i have always used
http://www.berkprod.com/Product_Web_Pages/pci_pc_watchdog.aspx
even have temp sensor you can also query.
Nice thing about these is they will also work when your not around.
Assuming the lock up is fully recoverable.
