VM as Cable Modem FW

Hello All,
has anyone used a VM for a cable modem firewall?
I tried it once but was unable to get an IP Address from my provider (my VM
host got an IP but not the VM)

My current setup is

Cable Modem <- OpenBSD -> Internal LAN

I would like to replace the firewall device with a VM. Has anyone tried
this before?
