GraphicsMagick fork from a few years back. When the original developer
of IM took development back in-house a few years ago, GM forked off. IM
is no longer compatible with GM, and IM does some things differently now
than before. If Jmagick expects "real" IM, it won't work with GM.
On Ubuntu (at least), all the former ImageMagick tools are now just
links to /usr/bin/gm.

(who still prefers NetPBM to IM/GM, even if Debian ships a version
that's more than a decade old and very limited.)
