Hi Hugh.
You appear to be thinking of Laser Discs, which did indeed come in both
forms. Please note that I'm talking about a Video Disc Player, which uses
a form of modified vinyl disc. It appears to be entirely CAV, so it
shouldn't be an issue. Might be worth looking at the Wikipedia article I
referenced.
