This could quite easily be just the way it was reported. But there doesn't seem to be a slogan-sized argument in favour of the project. On top of that, it seems to have taken 10 years since "the basic instruction [was] given by Munich's City Council." I don't know how a political initiative can survive that long with the time horizons of politicians being so short. Hofmann said that the project has, so far, released a total of four new versions of the LiMux core software. In future, "we will switch to the next Ubuntu and LibreOffice", That sounds like a retrenchment. In fact, how much control does Munich retain if it uses those packages? Does that matter? What were the goals and were they achieved? What unexpected outcomes arose during the project? Good or bad. He explained that the project therefore upholds its own comparative calculations which demonstrate that more than ?10 million has been saved by using Linux. That's not a lot of saving in a somewhat risky project that took 10 years. Expressed as a percentage, it is significant. The main cost (staff and training costs) were listed as ?22 million for any of the three approaches). Didn't we (City of Toronto) pay $85 million (plus the cost of 10,000 Oracle license) to MFP in the Computer leasing scandal (more than a decade ago)? Toronto has about twice the population of Munich. If you are NOT doing this calculation per capita, Finland's taxes are pretty small compared with Canada's: our taxes are roughly triple their whole GDP. So I'd say that that approach is not too useful. Here's a table of Tax revenues as a percentage of GDP: These days, for many governments, the government expenditure as a percentage of GDP is significantly higher that revenue. Denmark has backed off the least on revenue, apparently. The rise and fall of these percentages over the years is interesting. Look at Canada in 1965! If my memory serves, the recent shrinkage corresponds with a growth in deficit (all levels of government). Our health-care funding system isn't great EXCEPT when compared with the US one. Our 6% higher percentage tax revenue might reflect how health care is funded (not sure). Their health care took something like twice the percentage of GDP compared with ours. -- The Toronto Linux Users Group. Using linux and open source software of course. I have 4 scripts attached. The snoozeload() function does not need to be chmod'ed executable. The others do. I've come up with a simple multi-tasking load control on a multi-CPU system. My initial attempts at multi-tasking the workflow ended up with me fork-bombing my older system (Core-Duo) into oblivion. I did some reading of "man proc", specifically about /proc/loadavg. Here's an example reading... [i660][waltdnes][~] cat /proc/loadavg 0.06 0.09 0.12 1/228 28979 The first 3 fields are the 1/5/15 minute load averages. They respond way too slowly to be useful for process control. The 4th field is interesting. From the man page... > The fourth field consists of two numbers separated by a slash (/). > The first of these is the number of currently runnable kernel > scheduling entities (processes, threads). The value after the slash > is the number of kernel scheduling entities that currently exist on > the system. So in the above example, there was 1 process currently active. Note that the Heisenberg Principle is at work. Doing the measurement affects the value. The "cat" command is the 1 currently active process. Function file "~/bin/functions/snoozeload" declares a function "snoozeload" that accepts 1 parameter. It's an infinite loop that sleeps 1 second at a time, until the active process count is less than the parameter. snoozeload attempts to leave one core free for the system, so it doesn't make sense for a single-core CPU system. ***IMPORTANT*** The appropriate number for the "snoozeload" parameter appears to be the number of CPUs on your system. Give the huge pixelsize of the fullsize PNG, I often need a smaller version as well. 1/3rd and 1/4th work fine. File "binn" does "binning" via imagemagick. In addition to reducing size, it also reduces noise, as if the image was shot at a lower ISO. See the page http://www.noao.edu/outreach/aop/glossary/binning.html for technical details. The script "binn" expects 3 parameters... 1 The filename of an existing image 2 The filename of the output image to be created 3 The reduction factor binning works best with whole integer reduction. The script jumps through flaming hoops to ensure that the divisor goes evenly into image size. If necessary, "binn" will first create a copy with a small number of pixels on the right and/or bottom edges cropped to ensure even division. The original image is not modified. The script "workflow" expects to be executed in a directory containing CR2 and/or DNG files. It does the following... * sources function "snoozeload" * creates necessary directories for fullsize, 1/3rd, and 1/4th size images * removes a ~/.ufrawrc file if it exists The main loop * gets ${filename} from the "for" loop and calculates "${output_file}" * waits in "snoozeload" until fewer than 4 processes are active (my new PC is a 4-core unit) * it calls "process_raw" *AND FORKS IT OFF TO THE BACKGROUND*, and then proceeds to the next file in the directory process_raw * uses ufraw-batch to extract a full-sized PNG file from the raw file. The "auto" defaults for --exposure and --black-point work OK. * once the full-sized PNG file has been created, it forks off 2 more processes; 1 to create a 1/3rd size copy, and another to create a 1/4 size copy File "workflowj" works for JPG images. I use it for my smartphone camera, which is grainy even at ISO 100. Like "workflow", it creates destination directories. There is no raw extraction required, so it just loops through filenames, launching and forking processes to created binned images. -- Walter Dnes I don't run "desktop environments"; I run useful applications -------------- next part -------------- ??@?Qfiles.tar?X[o?6?3??" For the MOMENT I have set up an account with unblock-us.com as they offer a 7 day free trial, the $64,000 (well, $4.99/mo.) question is, are there better, cheaper, etc. options out there? Thanks. It took 3 months! ;) But the Russian post is not always that bad. I also ordered Raspberry Pi, here in Russia, from an Internet store in Moscow. They were so kind even that they called me to confirm that it is being send. That was on Friday, and today I got it! By usual post, not a sort of express. I just wonder, do not remember how it was in Canada. Here they have an option to pay for the ordered item at post office, when receiving it. Of course this is great, especially when users do not trust Internet sites and I myself accidentally can not pay by credit card online. That discussion on Pi was very interesting! -1 = e^ (pi * i) -- all 4 numbers there are pure abstract mathematical constructs. I use to show that equation at school, to explain kids what mathematics is . That Raspberry is hard to own. In Russia there are 2 places only where they import it (there are more where clones are available). I am going for a short visit to Poland and searched there - no way, only by Internet orders from abroad... zb. Off-lease laptops are a good thought: I'd suggest carting a Knoppix CD (hope you have a copy, or a way to burn one) around the places at College and Spadina and looking at what they have off-lease - see they boot Knoppix cleanly. The current rate seems to be around $300 for a 15" with a "dual core Pentium." If you get really lucky, you might find a Core2 Duo. I can't fully recommend Fortune Computers, but their prices are reasonable, they tend to have stacks of off-lease stuff, and I've bought from them in the past. A couple of years back I would've suggested rolling your own using Perl[1] or PHP[2] with Apache but now I just do everything in JS[3] (using node.js). It's fairly straight-forward but if you need a hand, hit me up off-list. > I've not tackled this before I would love some pointers as to where to > direct my energy. > > # Requirements > > - runs under Apache > What do you know is the barebones solution? See [1], [2]. I've used file-upload libraries in the past that support multiple simultaneous uploads and have fancy graphics but can't recall their names at the moment. To be honest, I'd rather forget them (for various reasons but mostly for the configuration nightmares.) It's really good: excellent built-in duplex *large format* scanner with ADF, CIFS network storage, giant paper bins, photo quality printing up to 330?482 mm, only slightly expensive print cartridges? It has a problem with Linux, though. As long as you're only ever printing to Letter or A4 paper, you'd never know. As soon as you try to print to Ledger paper (aka US B, Tabloid, 11?17") however, you're stuck: ? if you use the ?full feature? driver which allows you to select paper trays, it won't print larger than Letter. The best you'll get is a Letter sized print in the corner of a Ledger page. ? if you use the ?reduced? ESC-P/R driver, you can choose US B paper, but you can't choose the input tray. So you get about half of your printout truncated on a piece of Letter paper. I've had no success in modifying the PPDs for either driver (and it amazed me that we've kept using that format for more than 20 years). The open source drivers from Epson come with no support, and no contact e-mails for the authors. The linuxprinting.org forums went away with the move to the Linux Foundation. Ask Ubuntu is (as seems usual) spectacularly unhelpful. CUPS support seems to have mutated into ?We are very happy with the scraps thrown to us by our masters at Apple?. This, unfortunately, matters ? the driver that can print large format can only access the upper tray. On the setup menu on the printer console, tell the printer which tray holds what size of paper. 2. Install the epson-inkjet-printer-escpr driver; it should be in the standard Ubuntu repos. Define a printer (wf7520-lf, for example) that uses this driver. Set the paper size to "US B 11 x 17 in". 3. Ensure that the lsb and lsb-printing packages are installed: sudo apt-get install lsb lsb-printing 4. Download and install the non-free epson-201115w driver from the EPSON Download Center*. Define a printer (I used wf-7520 for the name) using this driver, making sure that the correct PPD (epson-inkjet-printer 1.0.0-1lsb3.2 (Seiko Epson Corporation LSB 3.2)) is used. Set it up to use Letter paper, and (important!) set the source to Paper Cassette 2. To print to large format, use the command: lp -d wf7520-lf -o PageSize=USB file.pdf To print regular size, just send the job to the wf-7520 device. cheers, Stewart *: http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/?OSC=LX -- The Toronto Linux Users Group. The hard part is if you need to do mobile calendaring and syncing of corporate contact lists etc. IMAP won't help you. If you *need* to do ActiveSync(tm), Z-push seems to be the only FOSS option, it integrates with Zarafa, but I've not personally tried it and would like to hear other people's experiences. http://www.zarafa.com/content/mobility They have a virtual appliance to download-and-test the core product. If you don't need ActiveSync, but you do need calendars and other stuff, the "see also" section of the Zarafa Wikipedia entry has a list of projects to check out too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zarafa_(software) A standards based approach would be to support IMAP, CalDav and CardDav. Note that Android doesn't support any of these natively and I haven't yet found a good set of apps to do the protocols. But Android does do ActiveSync(tm) :-( -Mike -- The Toronto Linux Users Group. Today I flashed it from the original Linksys firmware to http://downloads.openwrt.org/backfire/10.03.1/brcm-2.4/openwrt-wrt54g-squashfs.bin , which I believe is the correct OpenWRT firmware. The flash was successful, and I logged into the device via telnet (it initially has no password and is telnet only, as soon as you set a password it switches to ssh). I tried: # free total used free shared buffers Mem: 14316 12056 2260 0 1444 Swap: 0 0 0 Total: 14316 12056 2260 # df -h Filesystem Size Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/root 1.7M 1.7M 0 100% /rom tmpfs 7.0M 104.0K 6.9M 1% /tmp root 1.7M 1.7M 0 100% /tmp/root mini_fo:/tmp/root 1.7M 1.7M 0 100% /tmp/root /dev/mtdblock/4 1.5M 328.0K 1.2M 21% /overlay mini_fo:/overlay 1.7M 1.7M 0 100% / Which of these is Flash, and which is ROM? And why am I not seeing the kind of numbers (4/16) that I'm expecting in either? Or am I totally confused? I had a similar problem with the WRT54GS: I followed their more conservative installation routine, installing OpenWRT v8.09 then updating to 10.03.1 - after which I could still ssh in fine, but I discovered that I couldn't install anything with opkg because the device believed the memory was entirely full. This seemed improbable, as it's supposed to have 8MB and 32MB, and I'd done nothing except the two step flash. I suspect I have some horrible misunderstanding, but I can't quite figure it out despite attempts to research it. Alas, the term | "cloud" has nearly as many differing meanings as does the term "cluster." My comment was an easy, off-hand, imprecise one. Kind of the opposite of the long article I was pointing at. Any third party can be compromised (by state actors or otherwise) in a way that you are unaware of. If you have physical control of the hardware, it at least makes it theoretically possible that you become aware when your system is compromised. I said that carefully, but may still have it wrong. End-to-end crypto (encryption AND authentication) is the only way to eliminate certain vulnerabilities. If one end is in the cloud (i.e. outside your physical control), Man In The Middle attacks become possible. Nothing is a sure thing, but some vulnerabilities are obvious. Using the cloud is one that has always been obviously problematic but we've been in denial. The NSA revelations make denial less easy, but I'm sure we'll manage to rebuild our false confidence because using the cloud is so cool and useful. First step to denial: "oh, nobody would be interested in my data". Well, the NSA scooped metadata of ALL calls. There is theoretical work on computing on data while it is encrypted. In theory that would make the cloud safe. It is theoretically limited and currently quite impractical as far as I know. Fun theory though. And don't forget traffic analysis: that requires access to the "control plane" of the data streams, but not the actual content. This is what they are calling "metadata". It is a tremendously and surprisingly powerful technique. More reason to keep your flows in-house. Oh, and another thing: security is much harder in complex systems than simple ones. A long security border is much harder to be sure of than a short one. I think that using the cloud forces a fairly wide border. If you really want strong security, you may need an air-gap between your system and the internet. For example, anyone seriously creating certificates surely has such an air-gap. I wonder about DigiNotar. Nothing is a sure thing. Outsourcing IT may well be as insecure as the cloud. Even hiring employees rather than doing the work yourself is a little risky. So this isn't a simple black and white choice. -- The Toronto Linux Users Group. As I wanted to I imply in my first post, I was talking about using the cloud as a place to store backed up user files, not for virtualization. Such files would normally be packed in several encrypted tarballs. In each year I spend seven months in Toronto and five in Thailand. (Guess which ones I spend where.) I have desktop PCs in both places, each one currently with Debian Wheezy installed. My idea -- not implemented yet -- was on departure from one location to store my user files in the cloud, and then on arrival at the other location load them to the PC there. Russell | It's not quite that clear-cut. Agreed. UBS is between a rock and a hard place. They or their subsidiaries appear to have broken US and other laws. To "make it right" they are being asked to break Swiss laws. The Swiss lawmakers have resisted changing Swiss laws to help UBS out of this jam. The Swiss lawmakers who rejected the change in law appear (from the first article) to be rejecting it not on principle, but to use as a lever in an issue about banker pay. What a mess. The cleanest solution might be to convict UBS of the crimes, force it to release information that isn't under Swiss confidentiality law, and let the chips fall. UBS may be destroyed. But of course I'm saying this with very little information or insight. PS: UBS probably broke Canadian law too, and while Ernie Eves, our former premier, was head of the Canadian subsidiary. There are reports that that violation was by non-subsidiary bankers. PPS: anti-money-laundring and anti-tax-evasion rules are quite arbitrary and draconian. Either you are woodworking, or you are rapid prototyping. When I built a shed in my back yard, I did the preliminary model and drawings with SolidWorks. This worked very well. I made all sorts of stupid carpentry mistakes on the 3D CAD, as opposed to making them in my back yard with real wood. I was able to copy the resulting 2D drawings in DXF format, into Qcad. A Free Software 3D parametric CAD program would be fantastic, but it will not be happening any time in the forseeable future. 2D CAD software allows you to draw stuff to scale, then apply intelligent dimensions, that update when you stretch the feature. This is what the original poster needs, I think. -- Howard Gibson hgibson-MwcKTmeKVNQ at public.gmane.org howard.gibson-PadmjKOQAFnQT0dZR+AlfA at public.gmane.org jhowardgibson-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w at public.gmane.org http://home.eol.ca/~hgibson -- The Toronto Linux Users Group.
