ubuntu 12.04 sound problem

I had this with Ubuntu on my laptop prior to 13.04. Purging and
reinstalling pulseaudio after every login (!) was a lazy fix. Seemingly,
pulse would identify the sound hardware after it was reconfigured, but
wouldn't save the settings anywhere outside the current session.
