I've been using only the analog device so far; the reason I haven't
tried HDMI yet is that it works every time, in any variation - except
from express.

While the express server is running, stdio/stderr from the aplay
process are dumped to the screen and it explicitly states that no
sound cards are found.

I'll try HDMI to be thorough, just in case.  :-)
