Strange, this has never happened to me. I have used Linux since the
early days with OSS and a SB Live! card. Your problems might stem from
distros using alpha releases of Pulseaudio which has nothing to do with
ALSA. I always turn Pulseaudio off with a new installation and use ALSA
directly.
