Ubuntu-13.04 -- disabling ALL compiz desktop effects?

To Ubuntu experts,

It seems that Ubuntu-13.04 is slower than previous releases.  How do I
turn off all compiz desktop effects?  I tried ccsm (CompizConfig
Settings Manager), but desktop effects are still in effect.
