how to have /dev/audio on ubuntu?

I remain confused. But I want to thank for responses, Russell and Mel.

It seems that if I do not want to risk damaging the existing sound 
system I should not play too deep with what is there already.

Fortunately, I have another box with Centos, and /dev/audio is still there.
