If you keep Windows just for the sake of getting service (I have never
heard of such a requirement) and/or upgrade BIOS why create restore disks?
As for your point on anti-piracy efforts that hurt their paying users, you
are right, most anti-piracy efforts, especially DRM hurt the legal paying
users.
I understand that now more and more companies are moving away from DRM.
