Problem: my desktop system hangs. Question: what to do next

And sometimes not, though since I knew which machine had just dropped
off the net before jogging over to the computer room I really didn't
need the plume of smoke coming out the PSU fan to help point it out
to me.  Years ago, and I can still remember the smell of it.
