boot question -- USB stick vs. DVD

I'm reminded of a USB key that I found at a park near my home that had 
obviously been out there long enough for the tip to be rusted. I thought 
I might be able to identify its owner from the contents so I brought it 
home. Imagine my surprise when I saw what was obviously a bootable Linux 
key. There was no way to identify the owner, by the way.
