What is the best file encryption for linux?

As Mike said, the best is to encrypt the whole disk, but if this is nt what
you want, and you really wanna play only with specific files, I would
suggest you to take a look at GNUPG.

http://www.gnupg.org/

It's the GNU's implementation of OpenPGP.
