boot question -- USB stick vs. DVD

Hi all,

I was running out of DVD to burn, so I tried dd'ing the iso image to a
USB stick.  It booted okay.  My question is, can you put any iso image
to USB stick (or spare harddisk) and boot?  Or, does it only work for
specially prepared iso?
