ubuntu when Ubuntu Software Center is dead

not  sure which version of ubuntu you're running, but the switch from
straight alsa to pulseaudio a couple of years ago made direct access
to /dev/dsp pretty difficult.  depending on what exactly you're trying
to do, you might want to try

killall pulseaudio

and see if you get /dev/dsp back.  a lot of other stuff is likely to
break, though...
