postfix cyrus sasl auxprop on centos 5.6

I've tried setting the following in /etc/sasl2/smtpd.conf

pwcheck_method: auxprop
auxprop_plugin: sasldb
mech_list: PLAIN LOGIN CRAM-MD5  DIGEST-MD5

but it insists on using saslauthd. Any pointers ?
