possibly bad hardware, or a bad cable. doesn't work on windows either.

opened up case and made sure cable was on ok, check the bios everything 
looks ok

could it be a master/slave issue? i have an ide drive on the same cable. 
if it was a master/slave issue, i am guessing the bios would not detect 
both drives correctly? the hd works fine on my linux, just the DVD fails
