Sound problems in Squeeze

Update.

I purged and reinstalled Alsa.  Now alsa does give me sound.  Pulseaudio
still not working.  Pavucontrol shows there is output going on via the
bottom bouncing monitor.  However no sound comes through Amarok which is
configured to use pulsaudio.
