You can resize file systems using LVM assuming the file system is ext3.

Relevant commands may still be lvextend and resize2fs.  There is always
some risk though but since it is a new system you only loose the time to
make it.  

I've never seen a new Debian install take as much space as you
describe.  What packages did you install?
