When I first started with Linux, several years ago, I tried and gave up 
on Gnome because I found it too limiting.  It'd be nice if they had both 
useful and dumbed down versions of a desktop available.  Anyone 
developing a desktop should give the OS/2 desktop (Workplace Shell) a 
good look.  There were a lot of excellent features in it that I haven't 
seen elsewhere.
