The pox on both their houses. I use ICEWM. I don't run desktops, I
run applications. I also don't understand multiple desktops. My first
encounter with them was when I'd move the mouse pointer out of the way,
and all my apps disappeared on me... not very newbie-friendly.

I either ALT-TAB between apps, or move the mouse down to the bottom
where the menu bar pops up. It has an area with icons for launching my
selected apps, a "commandline" area, cpu-load applet, date-time applet,
network applet for each network interface, and on my laptop there's an
applet for battery time remaining. There's also a row for currently
open apps and windows. I can click on that row to select the currently
running app I want. Desktop icons would be useless, because I tend to
have several apps open all the time, and the desktop is totally covered
most of the time.
