Routing choice under user control per application instance?

I might be wrong, but can't this be done by passing a command-line
parameter indicating you want to use, say, eth1 instead of eth0?
Sorry if it sounds obvious, but sometimes I find myself trying to
reinvent the wheel and end up finding a command-line switch that saves
the day.
