One problem is service costs are much more than manufacturing costs.  A 
tech's time to simply look at many devices costs more than buying a new 
one.  My uncle ran across this many years ago.  He had a TV repair 
business.  Someone would come in with a cheap transistor radio and get 
annoyed when he told them it would cost more to repair than to buy a new 
one.  Very often, the greatest cost of a repair is the time it takes to 
diagnose the problem and then to replace a part that costs pennies.  Of 
course, the parts are often not available.
