One problem is service costs are much more than manufacturing costs. A
tech's time to simply look at many devices costs more than buying a new
one. My uncle ran across this many years ago. He had a TV repair
business. Someone would come in with a cheap transistor radio and get
annoyed when he told them it would cost more to repair than to buy a new
one. Very often, the greatest cost of a repair is the time it takes to
diagnose the problem and then to replace a part that costs pennies. Of
course, the parts are often not available.
