There are a few open source alternatives for Python IDEs. The ones I have heard the most at PyGTA meetings are:

* Eclipse and the PyDev extension <http://pydev.org/>
* Eric <http://eric-ide.python-projects.org/>
* NetBeans <http://wiki.netbeans.org/Python>
* Pida <http://pida.co.uk/>

You can find a full list on the Python Wiki <http://wiki.python.org/moin/IntegratedDevelopmentEnvironments>.

Personal I just use Gedit <http://projects.gnome.org/gedit/> or Kate <http://kate-editor.org/>, but some people like to juggle goslings.
