Question to audio experts... background noise

I'm not an audio expert, but every component in the chain has an effect.
I have a headphone jack on my speaker volume control -- the control is a
4' piece of wire that must be just the right length, because I can
distinctly pick up what sound like AM/FM radio signals if i turn the
volume way up with no sound. But onboard audio is fine..
