It's fairly surprising how quickly XFree86 disappeared from relevance
when a considerable portion of the developers switched over to work on
X.org.  There's definitely something cautionary there.

The cases of OpenBSD versus NetBSD and SQL-Leger versus LedgerSMB are
cautionary in "character" terms; both have associated participants
that said more-or-less unforgivably insulting things that helped
expose the gap between the respective communities.
