Debian nvidia video problem

Well if I can't trust a grub2 update to not hose things, I don't really 
trust a kernel update either, as borne out (unfortunately) by Giles' 
experience. Perhaps I'm long overdue for an nvidia catastrophe, but 
that's what backups are for ;)
