What is best format to transcode TS capture to

  An HDTV capture can eat up 9 gigs per hour in the TS (Transport
Stream) format.  What's the best format, in terms of space saving,
without losing quality?  I have both avidemux and mencoder available and
I don't mind a long slow encoding process.
