There are alternative SMS clients that support that.  My G1 has too
little RAM to be happy running such.

Handcent is the one I wish I was running:

It lets you customize notifications per user, including:
- Does a window pop up with the message?
- Does LED light up, in some colour?
- Which notification sound?
