went and rooted the Nexus S smartphone (with ClockworkMod recovery)

"You can find the modded firmware over on the XDA-Developers forum

the popular hangout for independent developers. According to the
instructions, the firmware is super simple to install, and reports
suggest that the open padlock that voids the warranty can be
re-locked, something that wasn't possible on the Nexus One.
